Tether froze my USDT. What do I do now?

Figures as of 26 October 2026 · An information guide, not legal advice.

If your USDT balance still shows but every transfer out fails, your wallet may have been blacklisted by Tether. This guide explains how to confirm it, what a freeze means on-chain, what usually happens next, and the one thing you must not do.

1. Confirm it is really a freeze

Most failed USDT transfers are not freezes. Rule these out first:

  • No fee token. On TRON a transfer needs TRX for the network fee; on Ethereum it needs ETH. Without it the transfer fails, but the wallet is fine.
  • Wrong network. USDT sent on TRON does not appear on Ethereum, and the other way round.
  • An exchange hold. If your USDT sits on an exchange, the exchange froze your account, not the token contract. Only the exchange can release it.
  • A contract blacklist. The balance shows, but every send fails. This is a real freeze.

To check the last case, paste the address into the free checker at omnitraceapp.com or send it to @OmniTraceBot. It reads the Tether and Circle contracts directly, so the answer is the contract's own, not our opinion. No account, no keys, no wallet connection.

2. What a freeze means

A freeze is a flag Tether sets on its own token contract. Once it is set:

  • Your balance stays visible but cannot move. The contract refuses every transfer out.
  • The wallet can still receive. Anything sent to it afterwards is stuck too.
  • Other tokens are not affected. TRX, ETH or other coins in the same wallet still move normally. Only the USDT (or USDC, if Circle froze it) is locked.

3. What usually happens next

There are three outcomes, and you do not choose between them:

  1. It stays frozen. Most frozen wallets stay that way. Of 12,728 addresses blacklisted on TRON and Ethereum since 2017, 1,376 (11%) were later released.
  2. Tether destroys the balance. Tether can burn a frozen balance and issue the same amount again elsewhere. That is final. It has happened to 2,346 addresses in our records.
  3. Tether releases it. Removing the flag takes the same multi-signature process as setting it. In practice a release follows a legal process, not a support request.

4. Nobody can unfreeze it for a fee

The refusal is written into the token contract. No key, transaction, payment or “recovery tool” moves a blacklisted balance.

Anyone who offers to unfreeze your USDT for a fee is stealing from you. That includes people who contact you after you post about it, “recovery experts”, and fake Tether support accounts. No legitimate person will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key.

5. What you can actually do

  1. Stop incoming payments to that address. Tell anyone who pays you to use a different wallet. Anything sent now is stuck too.
  2. Save the evidence. Keep the transaction hashes, who paid you, when, and why. If you received the funds in good faith, this is your story.
  3. Talk to a lawyer if the amount justifies it. The route back is legal, not technical: a lawyer contacts Tether, or the agency behind the action, through official channels. There is no guarantee it succeeds.
  4. Contact Tether only through tether.to. Ignore anyone who contacts you claiming to be Tether.
  5. Check the next payer before you accept. See How to check a wallet before an OTC or P2P trade.

6. Why was my wallet frozen?

Tether and Circle do not publish a reason for each freeze. Their terms let them freeze an address to comply with law-enforcement requests and sanctions, and to stop funds linked to hacks, scams and theft. Only the issuer knows the reason for a specific wallet. Anyone who claims to know yours without asking Tether is guessing.

One pattern the chain does show: freezes come in batches. Of 779,678 wallets that dealt with a wallet before it was frozen, 1,349 were frozen afterwards, a median of 123 seconds later. This is a figure about the whole population, not a prediction about any one wallet. More in Why does Tether freeze wallets?

Frequently asked

Can I still receive USDT on a frozen wallet?

Yes, but anything that arrives is stuck too.

Is my TRX or ETH frozen as well?

No. A Tether freeze only affects USDT on that contract. Other coins in the same wallet still move.

Is a frozen wallet the same as a sanctioned one?

No. A sanctions designation is a government naming a person or group; a freeze is Tether or Circle acting on its own contract. Either can happen without the other, so it is worth checking both: the issuers' blacklists and the OFAC sanctions list.

Can someone unfreeze my USDT for a fee?

No. The block is in the token contract and only the issuer can lift it. Anyone asking for a fee, a seed phrase or a private key to do it is a scammer.

How many wallets get frozen?

In 2026 so far (to 25 October), Tether and Circle froze 4,602 wallets on TRON and Ethereum. Every one is listed, day by day, in our freeze reports.
