USDT on TRON vs Ethereum, and USDC: who can freeze what

Figures as of 26 October 2026 · An information guide, not legal or financial advice.

“USDT” is not one token. It is the same dollar promise issued on several blockchains, each with its own contract. Who can freeze your coins, and how, depends on which one you hold.

Same issuer, same power

Holding USDT on TRON instead of Ethereum does not protect you from a freeze. Tether controls both contracts, and both have a blacklist. On both chains a freeze starts as a public proposal and takes effect when enough signers confirm it: 2 signatures on TRON, 3 on Ethereum. On TRON we measured a median of 7 minutes from proposal to freeze across 2,113 freezes, with 25% complete within a minute.

A freeze on one chain does not touch the other. If your wallet is frozen on TRON, USDT you hold on Ethereum is a separate balance on a separate contract.

Why most freezes are on TRON

Most freezes in our records are USDT on TRON, because that is where much of the everyday USDT trading happens. Low fees make TRON popular for payments and OTC deals, including the ones linked to scams. More volume means more freezes; it says nothing about any one wallet.

USDC: one step, no proposal

Circle's USDC uses a single blacklister address. A freeze happens in one transaction, with no public proposal first, so it can only be seen after it lands. Circle also freezes the same address on other chains where USDC lives. On Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon, Avalanche and Solana together we count 2,508 wallet freezes, but only 611 distinct addresses: most are the same address frozen on several chains.

What doesn't change between chains

  • A frozen balance is visible but can't move, and the wallet can still receive.
  • Your other coins are not frozen. TRX or ETH in the same wallet still move.
  • USDT sent on the wrong network does not arrive. USDT sent on TRON does not appear on Ethereum.
  • Nobody can unfreeze a wallet for a fee, on any chain.

Which should you use?

That depends on fees, where your counterparties are, and which exchanges you use. We don't make that choice for you. What we can say is that no version of USDT or USDC is freeze-proof, so the useful habit is the same on every chain: check who pays you before you accept. See How to check a wallet before an OTC or P2P trade, and why Tether freezes wallets.
